We all love to save money when we can. Sometimes, that means starting with small things, like how we keep house. Here are eight reminders on housekeeping practices that can help us save a few bucks in the process.
1. Read directions.
When you use cleaning products, do you follow the recommended directions for use? You may find you’re over-using them. With some products, a little goes a long way.
2. Treat stains right away.
The cardinal rule of stains? Don’t let it set! The quicker you can clean spills or stains, the better your chance of preventing permanent damage — and replacement costs.
3. Let your clothes air dry.
Letting your clothes air dry on a clothes line or clothing rack has several benefits. Your dryer will have less wear and tear simply because you aren’t using it as often, which also means your utility bill will be lower. Plus, your clothes will naturally last longer because dryers can shrink your clothes and cause fading over time.
4. Repurpose towels.
Need washcloths or cleaning rags? Don’t buy them. See if you have a towel you don’t need and cut it into small squares. And if you have a sewing machine, you can hem the edges so they hold together longer.
5. Use newspaper for drying.
Did you know you can use newspaper to dry mirrors and windows after washing them? They will be streak-free and you can save money on paper towels.
6. Keep things in good shape.
Get the most life out of your tools and appliances by keeping them in good shape. Read the maintenance portions of instruction manuals for long-term care. You may be surprised how much longer your dishwasher, vacuum, garbage disposal, washer/dryer units and other large, expensive appliances can last with attentive maintenance and care.
7. Take off your shoes.
Establish a “no shoes in the house” rule. It will save your floors from wear and tear. It also prevents stains from potentially damaging wood or carpet flooring — saving you from repair costs in the long run.
8. Be energy efficient.
Next time you need to buy a new appliance, get one that’s energy efficient. It may cost a little more up front, but will save you money year after year. You might also qualify for energy tax credits under the Energy Star program.
