Don't be caught without these pet emergency kit essentials

If life has taught us anything, it’s to expect the unexpected. Whether your pet gets hurt indoors or out, or you need to evacuate your home, the best way you can help take care of your pet is by being prepared.

Here’s a list of emergency and first aid essentials recommended by the Schwarzman Animal Medical Center.

Food and water

  • 7-day supply of food in an airtight container
  • 3+ days’ supply of water
  • Collapsible bowls, liquid dish soap, manual can opener

Medication

  • If your pet takes any medication, ask your vet for extra doses to put in your emergency kit.
  • Minimum 2-week supply of medications
  • Dosage and administration instructions

Documents

  • Keep your documents in a waterproof bag.
  • Microchip and pet license information
  • Veterinary records and vaccination history
  • Emergency contact information, including your veterinarian
  • Photo of your pet (preferably with you)

Travel items

  • Carrier or crate with your contact information attached
  • Extra collar/harness with ID tags and leash
  • Portable litter box and litter for cats
  • Favorite toys
  • Travel bed

First aid supplies

  • Vet-approved antibiotic ointment
  • Disposable gloves
  • Adhesive tape and scissors
  • Non-stick bandage/wrap
  • Absorbent gauze pads
  • Saline solution
  • Instant cold pack
  • Towels and a blanket
  • Digital thermometer
  • Styptic powder (this is an anti-hemorrhagic agent that stops light wounds from bleeding and can be found at most pet stores)
  • Muzzle
