Pet fire safety tips

We have tips to help you keep your four-legged loves safe in the event of a fire — and from accidentally starting one.

To prevent a fire:

  • Extinguish open flames. Dogs and cats can knock over candles, and curious kitties can paw at sizzling grease near the stove. For ambiance, use battery operated flameless candles instead.
  • Don’t use glass water bowls on wooden decks — they can heat up and start a fire.
  • Secure electrical wires.
  • Put covers over stove knobs.

To prepare for a fire:

  • Include your pets in a family emergency plan.
  • Put up a pet number decal on your door or window — and keep it updated.
  • Use monitored smoke detectors.
  • Inside, keep pets near entrances when you’re away.
  • Know your pets’ hideaways.

What to do during a fire:

  • If you can’t find your pets quickly, leave and let first responders search your home.
  • If possible, grab leashes and carriers on your way out for when your pets are found.
  • If your pets are still inside, leave the door open and call to them to exit once you’re outside.
