What are dogs saying with their tails?

Read time: 2 minutes

Did you know you can tell a lot from a dog’s tail movement? Turns out, they can say a lot. Learn what they’re thinking or feeling through their tails.

Perked up

When a dog is showing confidence, their tail will be perked up. It could be they’re feeling perky, but it may also mean they’re asserting dominance or intimidation toward another dog.

Straight out

A tail straight out behind them usually means apprehension, often when they’re encountering something or someone they’re not familiar with. Give the dog some space to figure things out and feel comfortable with the situation. If you are the dog owner (and you’re outside), hang on to your dog’s leash in case they try to bolt or have a negative response.

Casual wag

A slow, casual wag could mean a few things. First, it could mean they’re unsure whether or not to give their approval of something or someone. Second, if they’re meeting a new dog, they could be figuring out whether they should assume the beta or alpha role. If you are the dog owner, remove them from the situation until their tail goes into a full, happy wag.

Active wag

We love to see this wag. An active wag means the dog is happy. Specifically, they are happy to see you!

Pointing straight up

If you see a tail pointed straight up, you’re seeing a dog express anger. And that means they could be getting ready to react to whatever they’re mad about. If you are the dog owner, put a leash on your dog and crate them or take them to another room to calm down.

Between their legs

A tail between the legs often means a dog is sad, scared or ashamed. When this happens, calmly assure the dog everything is OK.

Pointing down

Similar to a tail between the legs, a tail pointing down can mean they’re sad or submissive. What’s different about this tail, however, is that it signifies a “beta” posture, which could mean they’re acknowledging you are the pack leader.

Relaxed and floppy

A relaxed and floppy-tailed dog is one happy pup! A dog with this kind of tail is expressing that it feels safe, loved and happy.
